Zhang Zhaoying 1988

Zhang Zhaoying was born in Guangzhou, China in 1988. He graduated from the Affiliated High School of Guangzhou Academy of Fine Arts in 2009, and obtained his bachelor's degree in Oil Painting from Sichuan Fine Arts Institute in 2013. In 2015, he completed his master's degree at the Brussels Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Belgium. Apart from his specialization in fine arts, Zhang Zhaoying has also studied performing arts and stage drama for over a decade, which influences his creative approach akin to that of a "director" evident in his works.

As a representative of outstanding Chinese artists born in the 1980s, Zhang Zhaoying's work is marked by its contemporary relevance. His creative style involves constant appropriation, creation, and exchange, emphasizing dramatic and ceremonial elements through layered compositions and diverse artistic media such as painting, sculpture, installations, and digital art. He employs different mediums to precisely articulate his expressions based on various themes.

His artistic logic follows an additive approach—combining, layering, and creating. Utilizing a variety of elements, he enriches his visuals with readability that encourages viewers to delve deeper into profound reflections rather than mere sensory stimulation on the surface. Confronted with myriad visual elements, Zhang adopts a "directorial" perspective to orchestrate scenes of contemporary art, weaving allegories that resonate deeply in the realm of modern art.
